From plastics with the strength and durability of metal to mass-produced skins, sensuous plastics, and rental DVDs that expire 48 hours after you've opened the packaging, "Plastics 2" offers a fascinating insight into the most innovative and unusual plastics for designers and manufacturers throughout the world. This book gets under the skin of products and materials to reveal the hidden qualities of plastics, and explores some of the materials that surround us today, and those that will surround us tomorrow, together with their practical applications. So if you want to know who is making what, from contemporary designer materials to tomorrow's everyday products, "Plastics 2" features facts and applications for dozens of new plastic products and materials, key properties of each material featured, plus invaluable Web contact addresses. The sixth volume in the respected 'Materials for Inspirational Design' series, "Plastics 2" will both inspire and amaze.

Ten years ago, the designer Hella Jongerius began a research project for the Swiss furniture company Vitra to study the properties and possibilities of colours, textures, finishes and materials. This long-term project has resulted in the Vitra Colour & Material Library, which is dedicated to the establishment and further development of an intelligent system of colours, materials and textiles that make it easy to create inspiring environments in offices, homes and public spaces. Hella Jongerius describes her method of research and the application of its results to the Vitra product portfolio.
